Successful restaurants must strike a delicate balance: the house should contain enough seats that it always appears almost over-flowingly full. Add to this good food and copious wine, and you are well on the way to describing Old Market staple La Buvette’s continued success.

The roads near South 11th Street are little too wide for France, but the cobblestone and old brick do their best at transporting one, as do the hanging ivy, potted plants, and ever-so-pleasantly-cramped seating. La Buvette is a deli and a place to buy fine French wine. Or it’s a bar with street seating perfect for a cheese plate with a side of people watching. Or it’s a restaurant with a rotating menu of dishes just large enough to keep the after dinner walk home light and airy. Or…

Sure, plenty of customers from outside the Old Market will drive to La Buvette. Though, with its chalkboard menu and house baked breads, it feels like a European neighborhood bistro, and I for one, refuse to ruin the aura.
