USA vs. England World Cup Match at Jake's

It might be a slight exaggeration to say that the sporting world descended on Jake’s Cigars and Spirits for the June 12 match between the US and England, but there was a healthy, rowdy, beer swilling crowd, and no finer group of people could have cheered on the US toward a vital tie with their rivals across the pond.

The match, the US’s first of the 2010 World Cup, was well attended by Jake’s regulars and families alike, with many having arrived early to sample the free bagels on offer (or was it the Bloody Mary specials?) for the early games: South Korea v Greece and Argentina v Nigeria. Through hearty chants of U-S-A and lusty boos for Beckham’s boys, Jake’s transformed into Benson’s best non-existent sports bar, if only for a day. Down early (as always), the Yanks drew even on Clint Dempsey’s equalizer in minute 39. Most at the bar, some more than a few mid-afternoon drinks in, could have stopped the shot that England keeper Robert Green muffed, but it was no matter. And on to more cheering, huzzah, huzzah!

Another fine reason to have a neighborhood bar to call your own.
